Striving

“This is what it is to be human: to see the essential existential futility of all action, all striving — and to act, to strive. This is what it is to be human: to reach forever beyond your grasp. This is what it is to be human: to live forever or die trying. This is what it is to be human: to perpetually ask the unanswerable questions, in the hope that the asking of them will somehow hasten the day when they will be answered. This is what it is to be human: to strive in the face of the certainty of failure. This is what it is to be human: to persist.”
― Spider Robinson

Thrown down to the bottom
again and again
yet still I pull myself up
and start to crawl
to walk to climb to soar
until the crash comes
I persist through it all
and will continue
to do less would mean to
deny my being
I may never find the end of my quest
but that has never mattered
and matters less the further I go

Butterfly Awareness

“Perfectly selfless, the beauty of it, the butterfly doesn’t take it as a personal achievement, he just disappears through the trees. You too, kind and humble and not-even-here, it wasn’t in a greedy mood that you saw the light that belongs to everybody.”
~ Jack Kerouac

Surrendering to change
Being while becoming
expansion without thought
of what comes next
or what came before.
Living every moment
in the present.
Effortless magick
Being one’s true self
beyond any illusions.
Letting it happen
without making it happen
It all sounds so simple
not a matter of doing more
but less.
Less thinking
Less Dwelling in the Past
Less second-guessing.

Chasing My Tail Seeking Self Knowledge

“Self-observation is very difficult.
The more you try, the more clearly you will see this.”
– G.I. Gurdjieff

Can I contain myself
enough to see my contents?
Can I be content
with what I can see
or will it always be hazy?
Can I hazard a guess as to the rest?
Can I rest without having that inner knowledge?
Will I know that what I see and
what others see are just partial glimpses?
Can I glimpse more by allowing myself to be?
Can I become more than the sum of the shadows I’ve been?
Can I then be contained?

Tree Wisdom

“It is stated that when a tree has passed a hundred years of age, a divine spirit will come dwell inside it, and show its appearance.”
— Toriyama Sekien

Spirit of the tree
Share your wisdom
give me shade
show me how to grow strong
using what nature gives me.
Spread your roots
and encompass beauty
Give a home supportive of life that you encounter
Forest spirit
teach me how to withstand storms
that seek to break me
and to bend with the winds of change
Help me learn to reach the sky
while aiming ever higher.

Comfort’s Curse

“…Things get broken, and sometimes they get repaired, and in most cases, you realize that no matter what gets damaged, life rearranges itself to compensate for your loss, sometimes wonderfully.”
— Hanya Yanagihara

Leave the old behind
the past, the broken
the things that no longer serve
If we cling to old memories
new ones cannot be made.
Free yourself from burdens
unburden yourself from care
New roads forever beckon
new songs await to be sung
comfort can be a curse
as it keeps us in its grasp
long past time to go
let it be a mere way station
between adventures and lessons
and paths
Face the unknown future with a laugh
that continues to unfold.

Spoken Reality, Broken Potentials

“What you see depends entirely upon the words you have to describe what you see. Nothing exists unless we say it.”
— Grant Morrison

Pure form, formless
silence the point within
emptiness
existence has not yet been spoken
yet something moves
consciousness ripples in the void
awaiting to be born
Nothing exists
so anything is possible
Every time something is spoken
potential is lost
countless possibilities
blown out of the water.
In each word we choose a reality
consigning countless others
to the abyss.
but don’t let that stop you.

No Tale in the Present

“You are not any of the stories you believed about yourself. What you are is actually the absence of story. That’s why the Buddha said, “There is no self.“”
— Adyashanti

To live in a story
is to live in a moment
that is not now
for tales imply an ending
a past already wrote
but the present is ever written
gone when word hits page
or lips.
Once upon a time..
a time not now
in a place
not here
but gone
the now may be spoken of some day
when it has become then
but our moment our now
is happening so no tale
in the unfolding..

Scars

“Scars have the strange power to remind us that our past is real.”
― Cormac McCarthy

On my shoulder there is a mark
A statue broken against it
It drew blood
as the feelings of jealousy washed over me.
My foot, I cut that as a child
playing games of innocence and laughter
Some scars make you smile.
That line under my lip
I ran into a fence hitchhiking
long roads and many songs brought back
by reflection.
The gash through my heart tho
that came from you
bittersweet memories
and a hopeless dream of being marked again.
